White-chan in Paris - that atas palace called Versailles

You really need to pay a visit to the Versailles to understand why the French Revolution happened and why Louis XVI kena his head chopped off. That palace is really super duper grand lor! Can imagine his grandfather Louis XIV telling his officers: "Yah I know the people can't pay more tax because they don't even have enough to put food on their tables, but then I need to renovate this one more room wor, so no choice lah!"!

Anyway, now that these Louis kings have all ashes to ashes, the French of course will make use of this atas palace to make money out of the tourists lah! EUR15 per head lor!

The Hall of Mirrors is supposed to be one of the most famous rooms in the Versailles, but too bad those lazy French did not bother to keep the mirrors and windows clean, so... oh well...

The rooms in the Versailles are named after the Roman gods like Apollo and Venus, all with super glam chandelier, dark colored wall carpet (yes, not a typo, these wallpaper actually looks more like carpets) and gold plated doors... after awhile, it got kinda boring actually...

Instead, we find the Hall of the Battles more interesting, where it houses paintings relating all important battles in the history of France. Not bad for a quick history lesson!

After we had enough of all the gold plated walls, doors and decos, White-chan suggested we take a break at the garden. The garden is actually pretty neat and very well maintained, but a pity a lot of the vases and stuff were covered up in the winter, and the fountain was not switched on...

White-chan in Paris - a date with Mona Lisa at the Louvre

We went to the Louvre twice. Yes you heard us, twice. Not because of our love for fine art, but because bo bian. On day one, we reached there at ten plus, and the super duper long queue went from the entrance at the glass pyramid all the way to almost out of the compound. We were told that at that point at the end of the queue, we were expecting to enter the Louvre at 2pm. Siao ah! On a cold winter morning, wait in the cold wind for four hours?!? Of course we went on Plan B - go to the nearby Musée d' Orsay lah! Even though we had to queue there too, at least only two hours lor!

So on the next day, we decided to reach there at nine, just when the Louvre opens. Still got queue lah, but at least it was only about twenty minutes lor!

Because we took a train instead of metro, we alighted at the Musée d' Orsay station and crossed over the bridge to the Louvre. By that way, we also passed by the Tuileries Garden next door and it was a nice scenic walk. We saw people jogging in the garden, walking their dogs, but the weirdest of them all... there was actually metal chairs placed around the fountain and in this kind of cold winter, there were actually people sitting there and staring at the fountain! Wah! Not cold meh?

In the garden, we saw a makan cart selling sandwiches, then when we walked closer, it was Paul! The Paul bakery is very atas in Asia, but in Paris, it's like another Ya Kun to the French. Too bad we had breakfast already, so we had to give it a pass...

The ticket to the Louvre costs EUR10, about SGD17, but it is so big, got so many famous paintings inside wor! And also, you can always get out for lunch (like we did) and then go back in again, and of course don't need to queue to go in again lah!

So please don't do it like some people that White-chan knows, who only take pictures of the glass pyramid and fountain outside the Louvre then leave thinking "I was here!" hor! Gahmen said we must learn to be more arty-farty more cultured hor!

Once we have gotten our tickets below the glass pyramid, we went straight to the Denon wing. Because the famous Mona Lisa is there mah! Kiasu White-chan said must go there take pictures before more crowd!

The Wedding Feast of Cana is that story which Jesus turned water into red wine because those blurs ran out of wine lah!

The Winged Victory of Samothrace is actually the goddness Victory that was supposed to be on the prow of a ship at the island of Samothrace.

The Venus de Milo who was dug out from the island of Melos and nobody knew who did it. They also cannot double confirm whether she is Aphrodite or Amphitrite. Aiyah, nice can already lah!

Besides famous paintings and sculptures, the Louvre also has one area that houses King Louis XIV's super luxurious rooms with big shiny chandeliers and more big colourful paintings on the ceilings! King wor! What do you expect?

What White-chan likes most is the garden with lots of very nice sculptures. The garden is very bright and zen, very good for relaxing his eyes after looking at too many paintings in one morning!

Oh, at the end of the tour, don't forget to look for the inverted glass pyramid somewhere on the way to the metro station wor!

White-chan in Paris - Euro Disneyland only so-so leh

The Euro Disneyland in Paris is very very expensive and it is very very far away from the city. So you have to take a train to get there and then pay through your nose. And no, the train to Euro Disneyland is just one of their normal train, not that kawaii Mickey Mouse train in Hong Kong...

White-chan still prefers the Hong Kong Mickey Mouse train and Mickey Mouse train station!

This Disneyland in Paris is not very large, only slightly larger than the one in Hong Kong, and really not a problem to finish all rides within one day. Oh, but we didn't do the one that is supposed to be most scenic because the ride suddently got technical issue... maybe track issue? Maybe they need cable-ties...

Since we planned to stay at the park till it closed, it meant we had to eat there... yes, those horrible theme park food! The food in Euro Disneyland is really expensive, even the cheapest taste-worse-than-Mac so-called Mexican food we had was more than SGD10 for a pathetic set of meal with drink. And it was the smallest serving of food we had in Paris. Maybe the food at those expensive restaurants are better lah, this we didn't know. But compared to the other gourmet food country Hong Kong, the Chinese food at Maxim was not too much more expensive than the usual restaurant food and the food were actually delicious!

When night falls, there is a night parade in the park. As usual, all Disney characters will come out to dance and greet the people. But I'm sorry that we have to complain again... the dancers did not look as happy as the dancers in Tokyo and while Hong Kong has no night parade, they have... fireworks!

You think Paris Disney is too poor to afford fireworks like Hong Kong?

Minister scared ITE graduates not enough

When some highly-paid think-he-very-smart elite minister was asked why cannot have more ITE graduates study at the polytechnics, he said "If everyone can move up, we will not have enough ITE graduates out there in the workforce". Win.

White-chan in Paris - Galeries Lafayette shopping

Notre Dame Cathedral might not be the most famous cathedral in France, but definitely is a MUST-GO in Paris. The Gothic architecture design is beautifully detailed and reminded White-chan of the Hunchback! And the best part? It's FREE admission! Muahahahah!

White-chan don't know why but the Paris Opera in French is Palais Garnier. You know? The Opera in The Phantom of the Opera is this Opera leh! Power sia! But seems like they're more popular with ballets than operas here.

White-chan at Opera House

Galeries Lafayette is THE place to shop in Paris. Actually last time they were in Orchard too, but I think no business so chup lup already. Maybe too atas? Anyway, they are really huge here in Paris, like the Isetan in Tokyo, different separate buildings selling different things, one building selling ONLY women clothing...

Anyway, we went to the Longchamp, where the bags there are supposed to be so much cheaper than Asia, and we had a long shopping list. And so, as expected, there was also a long Asian queue outside the shop. DOTZ...

There is one place in Galeries Lafayette that is really cool, which is the roof top. You can actually get a very good view of the city, including the Opera House and Eiffel Tower from there lor! And it's also... FREE!
